Praise for A Small Town:“A superior live-action version of the Road Runner cartoons with 12 coyotes and noncartoon violence.”―Kirkus Reviews“Readers expecting Perry's latest to be another of the author's superb comic caper novels are in for a big surprise. This is Perry in no-holds-barred action-thriller mode…The ever-versatile Perry shines yet again.―Booklist (starred review)Praise for Thomas Perry:“[Perry is] a master of nail-biting suspense.”―Los Angeles Times“Plenty of characters, plenty of emotion, plenty of insider expertise, but most of all plenty of irresistible momentum toward a fantastic climax―in other words, The Bomb Maker is typical Thomas Perry.”―Lee Child, on The Bomb Maker“The best thing about Thomas Perry’s thrillers are the devilishly ingenious schemes his protagonists devise to outwit their pursuers…Perry can really write.”―San Francisco Chronicle, on The Boyfriend“Perry is so skillful with the old chase-and-pursuit routine, creates such interesting characters, and writes about them so tellingly, one wants more immediately, not next year―right now.”―Boston Globe“Mr. Perry, in this first-rate thriller, proves as cagy as his criminal mastermind: The reader rarely anticipates his next move. He balances breathtaking suspense with romantic intrigue.”―Wall Street Journal, on The Bomb Maker“[A harrowing hunt-and-hide adventure…nobody writes chase scenes like Perry, who devises intricate itineraries, multiple identities and frequent costume changes.”―New York Times Book Review, on The Old Man“Perry…builds suspense with all the subtlety of a master chef nursing a risotto to a buttery perfection. It's nothing new to call Perry a master of the genre, but it's no less true for being widely acknowledged.”―Booklist “Perry is a master of plotting…Most readers know him from his Jane Whitefield ‘disappeared’ series. His thrillers, of which this is one of the best, are even better.” ―Globe and Mail (Toronto)“Perry delivers a perfect melding of character and plot, light and dark, and he totally immerses the reader in an irresistible narrative.”―Booklist, “Top 10 Crime Novels of the Year,” on Forty Thieves“Since his Edgar Award-winning debut novel, The Butcher's Boy . . . Thomas Perry has put together a rewarding string of suspense novels with as much cool competence as some of his best protagonists bring to their work . . . Perry’s a real pro.” ―Shelf Awareness, on The Old Man Thomas Perry is the bestselling author of over twenty novels, including the critically acclaimed Jane Whitefield series, Forty Thieves, and The Butcher’s Boy, which won the Edgar Award. He lives in Southern California.

In A Small Town, twelve conspirators meticulously plan to throw open all the gates to the prison that contains them, so that more than a thousand convicts may escape and pour into the nearby small town. The newly freed prisoners rape, murder, and destroy the town―burning down homes and businesses. An immense search ensues, but the twelve who plotted it all get away.

After two years, all efforts by the local and federal police agencies have been in vain. The mayor and city attorney meet, and Leah Hawkins, a six-foot, two-inch former star basketball player and resident good cop, is placed on sabbatical so that she can tour the country learning advanced police procedures. The sabbatical is merely a ruse, however, as her real job is to track the infamous twelve. And kill them.

Leah’s mission takes her across the country, from Florida to New York, from California to an anti-government settlement deep in the Ozarks. Soon, the surviving fugitives realize what she is up to, and a race to kill or be killed ensues. Full of exhilarating twists and surprisingly resonant, A Small Town will sweep readers along on Leah’s quest for vengeance.

Page-Turner Reverses Concept of Author’s Popular “Jane Whitefield” Series A SMALL TOWN reverses the basic concept of author Thomas Perry’s popular “Jane Whitefield” series (e.g., Vanishing Act). Instead of hiding good people from vicious killers, the main character (Leah Hawkins) hunts down and murders vicious escaped convicts. The 12 men on her “hit list” are the escapees who planned a federal prison break that destroyed the heart and soul of her hometown (the fictional Weldonville, Colorado). Leah is a law officer, and her hunt is financed by Weldonville civic leaders, but her actions are strictly off the books. The first four chapters of the novel, which detail the meticulously planned prison break (an operation much more complicated than the ones in “Ocean’s Eleven” or “The Great Escape”), are hard to read. From the beginning of the breakout, the inmates are in complete control, and they take no prisoners among the guards and administrators. The escapees open the entire prison, releasing more than 1000 prisoners into defenseless Weldonville. The escapees rape the wives of murdered prison guards, kill many of the guards’ family members and neighbors, loot local businesses, and burn homes and buildings. Now, two years later, Weldonville is dying--residents who survived the prison break have no desire to remain there with the memories of so many lost friends and loved ones. The FBI has been unable to trace the 12 planners, and has lost interest in them. When Leah sets out to exact the town’s revenge, she has only the real names of the planners, who have been living as free men, using fake identity papers. By following up on the tiniest clues, and by using careful planning, Leah locates and eliminates the men, one by one or in small groups. Eventually, she inadvertently draws the most vicious surviving escapees back to Weldonville, where they aim to finish the job of murdering the small town. Will they succeed? The novel provides everything that a “Jane Whitefield” fan could possibly expect and/or hope for--impossible odds, clever detection, page-turning action, meticulous planning, a likeable protagonist, a believable plot. This novel is a standalone, and unlikely to produce another series; however, I’d be happy to read another novel featuring Leah Hawkins any time.An interesting thriller... In "A Small Town" by Thomas Perry, his lead character, Leah Hawkins, is a 30-something cop in rural Colorado. The town she lives in and defends, Weldonville, hosts a supermax prison. On July 19th, hundreds of prisoners escape in a well-planned operation and terrorise the town people of Weldonville. Hundreds of people are raped and murdered in the most hideous ways. Leah Hawkins loses many friends, and, in particular, her lover is shot while trying to defend the town, at Leah's side. Two years on, most of the escaped prisoners had been either killed or captured. All but the twelve masterminds behind the break, who are still at liberty somewhere. And here's where the plot point goes hinky. Leah Hawkins - 6'2" and strong and clever - is tasked with tracking down the 12 men still at large...and killing them. She accepts the challenge and sets off to dispence frontier justice when the FBI had largely failed to find the 12. The balance of the book is Leah Hawkins tracking like a blood hound these men. That one single person - albeit with some help from the Weldonville police in terms of equipment - can succeed when the FBI has failed is a bit difficult to take in. But author Thomas Perry is the author of 20 or so previous thrillers, and he brings the book and Leah's character to an interesting conclusion.I don't read too many "thrillers". This one was pretty good on character development. Perry doesn't make Leah Hawkins a "super cop", but one with doubts of her mission and her own capabilities to carry it out. He also gives voice to most of the odious criminals who are being tracked. But the fact that one person could track down 12 others who are located all over the country is a bit of a stretch.
